Our History

In 1959, three Southern Indiana women had a dream of establishing a counseling agency to be an anchor for people in crisis. The agency would provide affordable mental health, marriage and family, and pastoral counseling services to children, teenagers, and adults in Southern Indiana. Through the years, this dream was realized as Personal Counseling Service, Inc. established a Board of Directors, incorporated as a not-for-profit agency, and opened three satellite locations around Southern Indiana and Kentucky. Now centralized in one location in Clarksville, Indiana, PCS has provided over 60,000 persons more than 480,000 hours of counseling since 1959.

Quality counseling, prevention, and education programs became need-oriented and outcome-based as alliances with the following agencies:

An Anchor for People in Crisis: A Success Story

When I first came to Personal Counseling, my grandchildren, Jamal and Mary were 6 and 9 years old.  Their father was killed in a drug deal and my daughter is in prison.  The only support my grandchildren have is me, a widowed grandmother.  I have a fixed income and don’t have legal custody of Jamal and Mary.  Jamal and Mary experienced physical and mental abuse by their parents and strangers.  They had no sense of right or wrong and had learned to lie to survive.  Medicaid sessions had run out and I was unable to afford counseling. I was in tears thinking that my grandchildren had come so far and were finally acting like normal children.

I feared they would return to old habits if they could not continue counseling.  Thanks to Metro United Way grant money, Personal Counseling was able to continue counseling services for Jamal and Mary.  This could have been a much different outcome if Personal Counseling was not receiving money from Metro United Way.  I don’t even want to think about what would have happened to my grandbabies if Personal Counseling had not stayed with us.
